What Is a 40 kVA Servo Stabilizer?

A 40 kVA servo stabilizer is an automatic voltage regulator rated to carry 40 kilovolt-amperes of load while holding the output steady through voltage fluctuation. A microcontroller senses the voltage, and a motor-driven variac (a variable autotransformer) and buck-boost transformer add or remove volts. SG Power's 40 kVA unit is three phase and air cooled.

It is also called a 40 kVA servo voltage stabilizer, a 40 kVA servo controlled voltage stabilizer or a 40 kVA 3 phase servo stabilizer. Other names are a 40 kVA automatic voltage regulator (AVR) or simply a 40kva stabilizer. Some buyers spell it servo stabiliser. Each of the three phases has its own variac, buck-boost transformer and stepper motor. In an unbalanced design, each phase is corrected on its own. To see how the correction works step by step, read how a servo stabilizer works.

How Much Load Can a 40 kVA Servo Stabilizer Run?

A 40 kVA servo stabilizer runs about 32 kW at full rating, at a 0.8 power factor. For daily use, keep the running load to about 25.6 kW, so a 25% margin covers motor starting current. Each phase then carries up to about 8.5 kW, and the unit draws about 55.6 A per phase.

Running load per phaseAbout 8.5 kW
Full-load currentAbout 55.6 A per phase at 415V
Fits running loads fromAbout 19.2 kW to 25.6 kW

Safe running load = 40 kVA × 0.8 power factor ÷ 1.25. Current = 40,000 ÷ (1.732 × 415).

Typical loads a 40 kVA unit can carry, within about 25.6 kW in total:

Small or mid-size factory: two or three CNC machines, or one 30 HP motor with lighting

Hospital or nursing home: X-ray, CT support equipment, lab analysers, OT lights, computers and ACs

Office building, showroom or small hotel: servers, lifts, lighting and twelve to fourteen split ACs

Housing society common areas: lifts, water pumps, corridor lighting and security systems

How to Calculate If 40 kVA Is the Right Size

To check whether 40 kVA is the right size, add the kW of every load that runs at the same time and divide by a 0.8 power factor. Then add a 25% margin and choose the next size up. A 40 kVA unit fits a running load of about 19.2 kW to 25.6 kW.

1

List the running load: add the kW of the machines, ACs and appliances that run together.

2

Convert kW to kVA: divide by 0.8.

3

Add a 25% margin: multiply by 1.25 for starting current and growth.

4

Choose the size: if the result is between 30 and 40 kVA, choose 40 kVA; above 40 kVA, choose 50 kVA.

Formula: Required kVA = running load (kW) ÷ 0.8 × 1.25

For example, a 24 kW running load needs 24 ÷ 0.8 × 1.25, or 37.5 kVA, so a 40 kVA servo stabilizer fits.

For motors, size from the nameplate full-load current, which already includes motor efficiency; efficiency classes are set out in IS 12615, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Size the stabilizer on the load it protects, not on the rating of your distribution transformer.

Not sure which size fits? Send your load list, and we'll check it free.

30 kVA vs 40 kVA vs 50 kVA: Which Size Do You Need?

Choose 30 kVA for running loads up to about 19.2 kW, 40 kVA for about 19.2 to 25.6 kW, and 50 kVA for up to about 32 kW. All three are SG Power air cooled catalogue models. The 40 kVA unit fits loads that fall between 30 kVA and 50 kVA.

When to choose 50 kVA instead: pick 50 kVA if your load is close to 25.6 kW or you plan to add machines or ACs within two years. It also suits sites with large direct-on-line motors. For loads under about 19.2 kW, the 30 kVA unit is enough. The 50 kVA unit is the largest air cooled model. Above it, choose an oil cooled unit, such as the 75 kVA oil cooled model; the oil cooled range runs up to 500 kVA.

40 kVA Servo Stabilizer Price in India

The 40 kVA servo stabilizer price depends on the input range, balanced or unbalanced design, protections and extras. Every 40 kVA unit is priced on request after a free load check; the wide-range model costs more, because it needs a larger variac and transformer. You get a written quote for the exact model, with GST, freight and installation shown separately.

When you compare a 40 kVA stabilizer price across sellers, check that every quote is for a three-phase servo unit with the same input range and design.

Why Do 40 kVA Prices Vary Online?

Online 40 kVA prices vary widely because sellers list very different products under the same rating. Some are single-phase appliance stabilizers, others are three-phase servo units with narrow or wide input ranges. Compare the full specification, not the headline price, before you decide.

What Differs Between ListingsWhy It Matters
Single phase or three phaseA three-phase unit has three sets of variac, transformer and motor
Input voltage rangeA wider range needs a larger transformer
Balanced or unbalanced designUnbalanced units correct each phase separately
Regulation and efficiency±1% regulation and the efficiency figure, 97% tested to IS 2026 (Part 1), should be stated in writing
Protections and time delaySingle phasing, phase reversal and overload cut-offs protect motors
Testing and serviceRoutine testing and local service affect long-term cost
GST, freight and installationSome prices leave these out

Is a 40 kVA Single Phase Servo Stabilizer Practical?

A 40 kVA single phase servo stabilizer would draw about 174 A at 230V, far more than single-phase home and shop connections are designed to carry. That is why SG Power builds its 40 kVA units as three phase. For single-phase sites, the 15 kVA unit is our largest standard single-phase model.

Three-phase supply: choose the 40 kVA three-phase unit, balanced or unbalanced. See all 3 phase stabilizers.

Single-phase supply, load up to about 9.6 kW: choose the 15 kVA single-phase unit.

Single-phase supply, heavier load: ask your electricity board about a three-phase connection, then choose a three-phase stabilizer. The Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 set out how consumers apply for a new connection or a change in sanctioned load.

What Input Voltage Range Does the 40 kVA Stabilizer Cover?

SG Power's datasheets list the 40 kVA air cooled servo stabilizer in two input bands: a standard 170–280V per phase and a wide 140–280V per phase, both 340–480V phase to phase. Both hold the output at 410V ±1% phase to phase. Choose the 40 kVA wide range servo stabilizer where the voltage often falls below 170V on any phase.

ModelInput Band per PhasePhase to PhaseChoose This When
40 kVA Air Cooled170–280V340–480VVoltage falls in the evening or at the end of a long line, but rarely below 170V
40 kVA Air Cooled, wide range140–280V340–480VVoltage often drops below 170V, as at the end of rural or industrial lines
Custom rangeOn requestOn requestYour lowest recorded voltage is outside both bands

Many online listings quote “90–300V” ranges. Those are single-phase appliance or mainline stabilizers, not three-phase servo units. Record your lowest and highest voltage on each phase for a few days, and share the readings when you ask for a quote.

Balanced or Unbalanced 40 kVA Servo Stabilizer?

Choose a balanced 40 kVA servo stabilizer when three-phase motors and machines load each phase equally. Choose an unbalanced servo stabilizer design when homes, clinics or offices have ACs and lights spread unevenly across the phases. SG Power makes the 40 kVA unit in both designs.

DesignHow It CorrectsBest For
BalancedCorrects all three phases togetherCNC machines, motors and production lines
UnbalancedCorrects each phase on its ownHomes, villas, clinics, offices and showrooms with single-phase loads

In an unbalanced home, size on the most heavily loaded phase. Each phase of a 40 kVA unit carries up to about 13.3 kVA, or about 8.5 kW with the 25% margin.

What Are the 40 kVA Servo Stabilizer Specifications?

SG Power's 40 kVA servo stabilizer specifications follow its KNEUTRON air cooled range, with the guaranteed figures taken from the 40 kVA datasheets. The unit regulates the output within ±1% at 97% efficiency, with an adjustable output delay of 3 to 200 seconds. Any other input range can be built to customer specification to suit the site.

What Features and Protections Does the 40 kVA Unit Have?

Every SG Power 40 kVA servo stabilizer is a microcontroller-based digital servo stabilizer, with a KNEUTRON controller, a front-panel display and ±1% regulation. Its protections cut off the output on over-voltage, under-voltage, overload, phase reversal and single phasing, with an adjustable time delay. Calibration is done on a touchpad.

The display shows phase-to-neutral and phase-to-phase voltage, frequency and the output current of each phase. Start, Stop and Menu keypads sit on the front panel. You can set the output voltage and input band, and choose manual or automatic start and stop.

ProtectionWhat It Guards Against
Over-voltage cut-offHigh mains voltage reaching machines and appliances
Under-voltage cut-offVery low voltage that overheats motors and compressors
Overload cut-offLoad above the set limit; the output restarts once the load is reduced and Start is pressed
Output delay (3–200 seconds)Compressor and motor damage when power returns after a cut
Trip time delay (variable settings)Nuisance tripping on very short voltage swings
Phase reversal cut-offWrong phase sequence, which can run motors backwards
Single phasing protectionLoss of one phase, which can burn out three-phase motors

Is a 40 kVA Stabilizer Right for Your Home?

A 40 kVA stabilizer for home use is rarely needed. It suits only very large estates or farmhouses with twelve or more ACs, lifts and pumps running together, or a housing society's common areas. Most homes need 10 to 20 kVA, so size on your real running load per phase first.

How to Install and Maintain a 40 kVA Servo Stabilizer

Have a qualified electrician install the 40 kVA servo stabilizer on the mainline, after the meter or DG changeover and before the distribution board. Connect it to a proper earthing system, keep the vents clean and book a yearly maintenance service. Simple checks keep it accurate.

Size the cables and breaker for about 56 A per phase, allowing for higher input current at low voltage, especially on the wide-range model

Connect the body to the building's earthing system, with earthing rods, earthing clamps and an earth pit cover

Fit surge protection devices ahead of the stabilizer, and lightning protection where needed; a stabilizer does not stop lightning spikes

Connect any UPS or inverter after the stabilizer, never before it

Place it indoors with clear space around the vents, away from sun, rain, dust and steam

Use the bypass switch only during servicing

What 40 kVA Stabilizer Tips Do Indian Users and Electricians Share?

Indian buyers and electricians on TechEnclave, Team-BHP and HiFiVision share clear lessons that apply to 40 kVA and other large three-phase stabilizers. Measure your real voltage and load first, leave headroom rather than running at 100%, and keep geysers off the stabilized line. Choose a supplier with quick local service.

Common Concern on ForumsWhat to Do
A buyer was quoted a 30 kVA three-phase unit for a house with unbalanced loads (TechEnclave)Size on the real running load of each phase; homes rarely need 40 kVA, which carries up to about 8.5 kW per phase
A large home worked out to about 20 kVA, and the owner chose 25 kVA for headroom (TechEnclave)Leave headroom so the unit does not run at 100% all day; if your load is near 25.6 kW, choose 50 kVA
Three-phase or single-phase servo for a whole house?Ask how the unit behaves if one phase fails; SG Power units cut off the output and restart after a delay
A line fault or lightning damaged appliancesFit surge protection ahead of the stabilizer; no stabilizer can stop high-voltage faults
Voltage differs from phase to phase, so some homeowners fit three single-phase stabilizersAn unbalanced 40 kVA three-phase unit corrects each phase on its own, in one cabinet, with single phasing protection for three-phase motors
One phase reads about 190V by day and about 150V at nightLog each phase for several days, including nights; if any reading falls below 170V, choose the 40 kVA wide-range (140–280V) model
