Why Specify a Strip in Pipe Copper Bonded Earth Electrode?

A strip in pipe copper bonded earth electrode has a conductive strip running through the centre of the copper bonded pipe, connected to the terminal and surrounded by conductive compound. The strip gives fault current a direct, continuous path along the full length of the electrode, which suits industrial sites where reliable current distribution and mechanical robustness matter.

How Is a Strip in Pipe Copper Bonded Earth Electrode Constructed?

A strip in pipe copper bonded earth electrode consists of a copper bonded outer pipe with a conductive strip fixed along its centre. The strip is connected to the terminal, and the space around it is filled with crystalline conductive mix, so fault current travels down the strip, through the compound and out through the pipe wall into the backfill and soil.

1. Central strip

The strip, which SG Power makes in pure copper for its copper bonded electrodes, forms a direct path from the terminal along the electrode length.

2. Copper bonded outer pipe

The outer pipe provides the external dissipation surface and protects the internal strip and compound.

3. Conductive compound

The crystalline conductive mix surrounds the strip and bonds it electrically to the pipe along its full length.

4. Sealed ends

Both ends are sealed to keep the compound and strip protected over the service life.

When Should You Choose Strip in Pipe?

Choose a strip in pipe copper bonded earth electrode when you want a continuous copper conductor running the full length of the electrode, or when the installation must withstand demanding mechanical and electrical conditions.

Heavy industry such as steel, cement and chemical plants with high fault currents and harsh conditions.

Telecom towers and data centres where a continuous copper path supports equipment and surge protection earthing.

Process plants where downtime is costly and earthing reliability is critical.

Aggressive soil conditions where copper inside and outside the electrode adds corrosion resistance.

Projects specifying a copper conductor core in the earthing electrode.

For general commercial installations, the Standard copper bonded earth electrode is usually more economical. For substations and switchyards, also compare the Pipe in Pipe copper bonded earth electrode.
