A pipe in pipe copper bonded earth electrode uses two concentric pipes with conductive compound packed between them. This twin-pipe design gives more conductive surface inside the electrode than a single-pipe design, which helps it handle higher fault currents and maintain stable resistance on substations, industrial plants and other high fault level sites.

A pipe in pipe copper bonded earth electrode is built from an outer copper bonded pipe and a smaller inner pipe placed concentrically inside it. The annular space between the two pipes is pressure-filled with crystalline conductive mix, and the terminal is connected so fault current can flow through both pipes and the compound into the surrounding backfill and soil.
The copper bonded outer pipe is in direct contact with the backfill compound and forms the main dissipation surface.
The inner pipe adds a second internal conductive path and increases the conductive area inside the electrode.
The crystalline conductive mix between the pipes links them electrically and helps keep resistance stable as soil moisture changes.
Both ends are sealed so the compound stays in place over the electrode's service life.
Choose a pipe in pipe copper bonded earth electrode when the site has a higher fault level, when the earthing must stay stable under repeated fault or surge conditions, or when fewer electrodes are preferred to reach the target earth resistance.
Substations and switchyards where fault levels are higher and electrodes are usually connected into an earth mat or grid.
Industrial plants with large motors, transformers and heavy process equipment.
Railway and metro projects that need robust earthing for traction, signalling and station systems.
High soil resistivity sites where a larger conductive surface helps reduce the number of electrodes needed.
Lightning protection earthing on critical structures, where the electrode must handle repeated surge currents.
For commercial buildings and general LV installations, the Standard copper bonded earth electrode is usually more economical. Where maximum mechanical robustness is the priority, compare the Strip in Pipe copper bonded earth electrode.
