An IGBT rectifier is an industrial DC power supply that uses insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) switching at high frequency to convert AC mains into controlled, low-ripple DC. It is smaller, lighter and more efficient than an older thyristor (SCR) rectifier, and is used for electroplating, anodizing, electrolysis and other electrochemical processes. It is also called an IGBT based rectifier or a high frequency rectifier, because it works on the switch mode (SMPS) principle. For terms such as ripple, current density and duty cycle, see the rectifier terms on our main rectifier page.
An IGBT rectifier converts mains AC into smooth DC in five stages:
Input rectification: the three-phase 415 V supply is rectified to DC.
High-frequency switching: IGBTs switch this DC on and off thousands of times a second.
Transformation: a compact high-frequency transformer steps the voltage down to the process level.
Output rectification and filtering: the output is rectified again and filtered to smooth DC, with ripple below 2%.
Control: a microprocessor adjusts the switching to hold the set current or voltage, so the output stays steady as the tank load changes.
An IGBT rectifier switches at high frequency through a small transformer, giving lower ripple, higher efficiency and a smaller unit than an SCR rectifier. An SCR rectifier controls the mains-frequency waveform through a large 50 Hz transformer.
| Feature | IGBT rectifier (SG Power) | SCR (thyristor) rectifier |
|---|---|---|
| Output ripple | Below 2% (below 1% optional) | Higher |
| Efficiency | Above 90%, up to 97% | Falls at part load |
| Power saving | Up to 40% | None |
| Size and weight | Compact and light | Large and heavy |
| Response to load changes | Fast | Slower |
| Controls | Microprocessor control; HMI, PLC, Modbus and data logging options | Usually basic |

To choose an IGBT rectifier model, work out the current your tank needs (load area × current density, plus a 20 to 25% margin), then pick the model whose rating covers it. Our main rectifier page explains how to size an industrial rectifier step by step; this table maps the result to SG Power models.
| Required current (with margin) | Recommended model |
|---|---|
| Up to 500 A | IGBT-12/500 |
| 500 A to 1,000 A | IGBT-12/1000 |
| 1,000 A to 1,500 A | IGBT-12/1500 |
| 1,500 A to 2,000 A | IGBT-12/2000 |
| 2,000 A to 5,000 A | IGBT-12/5000 |
| Above 5,000 A or other voltages | Custom design |
Then add the options your line needs: PLC or Modbus for automated lines, data logging for quality records, and fast polarity reversal for periodic reverse plating or electropolishing. Use oil cooled models in humid or acidic shops.
Plating shops and process plants choose SG Power as their IGBT rectifier manufacturer for lower power bills, steady output and direct support from the factory that builds the unit. These are the main reasons buyers give.
Up to 40% power saving: energy-efficient switching keeps efficiency above 90%, up to 97%, on lines that run 24x7.
Ripple below 2%, or below 1% as an option: bright, even deposits and fewer rejects.
Five standard models from 500 A to 5,000 A, plus custom voltages and currents.
Modern controls: touch screen HMI, timer and ramp, data logging, PLC and Modbus.
Air or oil cooling to suit clean rooms or corrosive plating shops.
Tested before dispatch: 100% of units tested, with a three-level quality check covering 173 checkpoints; a test report comes with each unit.
After-sales support: installation, commissioning, spare parts and repairs.

Compare IGBT rectifier manufacturers on measured performance and support, not on brochure figures alone. Ripple, part-load efficiency, cooling and service decide how a rectifier performs on your line for years, so check each of these points before you order.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Measured ripple at your operating current | High ripple causes dull or uneven deposits |
| Efficiency at part load | Plating rectifiers rarely run at full load |
| Rated for 24x7 operation | Intermittent-duty units overheat on 24x7 lines |
| Cooling suited to your shop | Air cooled units corrode in acidic, humid rooms |
| Control and communication options | Automated lines need PLC or Modbus |
| Factory load test report | Proves the rating before dispatch |
| Spare parts and service support | Line downtime costs more than the rectifier |
